Wineopoly

A blind tasting of traditional varietals to select Varietals, Vintage, and Terroir

Its time to ring in the New Year with the first annual FotV Club Wineopoly! Competition.

Each person should bring a wine (priced under $15) in a brown paper bag. The wine should be:
A common single varietal (i.e. Merlot, Syrah, or Pinot Gris)
From a specific vintage (1999, 2002) and
A specific region (CA, Italy, France, Washington).

We will divide into groups and blind test each wine. No one will have any idea of what we are tasting. The team will discuss and attempt to answer three questions:

What is the varietal?
What is the vintage?
What is the region?

Whoever gets the most correct will win a wine prize! Don't worry, none of us will be very good to start, this is just for fun. Can't wait to see everyone there!

I'm not sure who is providing snacks this month. I do know that Cherylynne will be hosting Dessert Wines Deux in Feb. and Kate will be hosting in March. Look for upcoming announcements.

Perfect Pinots

Pinot Noir

"Uh, I don't know, I don't know. Um, it's a hard grape to grow, as you know. Right? It's uh, it's thin-skinned, temperamental, ripens early. It's, you know, it's not a survivor like Cabernet, which can just grow anywhere and uh, thrive even when it's neglected. No, Pinot needs constant care and attention. You know? And in fact it can only grow in these really specific, little, tucked away corners of the world. And, and only the most patient and nurturing of growers can do it, really. Only somebody who really takes the time to understand Pinot's potential can then coax it into its fullest expression. Then, I mean, oh its flavors, they're just the most haunting and brilliant and thrilling and subtle and... ancient on the planet." -Miles Raymond in SIDEWAYS.

In honour of Sideways' sucess with Oscar, we will salute the Bitchy Berries that are Pinot Noir.

Each person should bring a Pinot Noir wine (priced under $20). Kate will be providing the goodies.

I want my…

Chilean Wine tasting

After hearing back from you all, the last Friday in August worked for the most people. No one recommended a theme so I thought we might want to go south of the border, way south, to one of the premiere viniculture regions in South America.

Sing it with me now.

I want my Char Do Nay, Char Do Nay, Char Do Nay, GRAPES.
I want my Char Do Nay, Char Do Nay, Char Do Nay, GRAPES.
Chile's Chardonnay grapes.
Chile's Chardonnay grapes.
French Oak Barrels.

Please join us Friday night for a Chilean Wine tasting. Everyone should bring a bottle of Chilean wine priced under $15 (Chile has some great values). I didn't get anyone to host so I guess it's up to me. Please let me know if you have any good ideas for Chilean food. I have no idea.

Wicked Wines

Wines that scare you

We will celebrate our Second Anniversary not with the traditional Cotton and not with the modern China but with FEAR!

It's time to let your lees out of your barrels and bring a wine that frightens you. It could be a scary-themed wine: Vampire or 7 Deadly Zins or just a wine you are personally afraid of, for me any Merlot of course or maybe an Ecco Domani. An unusual wine from Hungary or a unique wine from rice or fruit would be great as well. The full moon (and $15) is the limit.

The great Michelle and Dougan will be providing spooky snacks-they are the best! Hope to see you all at this scarefully delicious tasting.

NOTE: Wine costumes are not required but would inspire awe from your hosts.

You are welcome to bring a little plate of treats or a bottle of Mead (honey-wine).

In addition, we will be doing a white elephant-style wine gift exchange. Everyone who wants to participate, please bring a fun and inexpensive bottle of wine wrapped or in a bag. We will pick numbers and fight over the wine.

I know its on a weird day but I hope you can come by for a little while.

Wineopoly II

A blind tasting of traditional varietals to select Varietal, Vintage, and Terroir

You are challenged to the Second Annual Denver Wineopoly Competition.

Modeled after a LoDo restaurant concept, we will break into teams and attempt to descern three components of the wines that are brought. Each team needs to uncover the wine's:
Varietal (Grape)
Vintage (Year)
Vinicultural Area (State/Country)

The team with the most points at the end of the evening wins.

Please bring a bottle of wine with a single varietal, vintage, and vinicultural area priced under $15. No blended wines and try to choose some fairly classic wines.

Steph and Matt will be hosting the food for this month.

Good Luck!

Chardonnay

After a parade of unusual wine themes usually followed by unusual shots and flasks we are going back to basics with one of the most common but difficult to understand wines.

The theme for April is CHARDONNAY. You can find amazing Chardonnays in almost every region in the world. From the tropical notes of South Australian to the heavy-handed oak aged Sonomas to the classic crispness of Burgundy, you can find the perfect Chardonnay to fit your palate.

Please bring a bottle of any wine priced at no more than $20. Feel free to double up with people for better wine.

If anyone would like to provide some oak chips and dip for us to enjoy, please let me know.

Razz and Rozz

The theme for May is the never ending name debate: Shiraz and Syrah.

The Aussies call it Sherazz and the French say Serine but we all call it delicious; strong, rich, with aromas of pepper, violet and raspberry.

Shiraz and Syrah are both names for the same red wine grape. This grape is most definitely NOT the same as Petit Sirah, a different red wine grape grown mostly in California.

Please bring a bottle of wine priced at no more than $20. Please feel free to double up with people and bring a single bottle of better wine. Cetta will be providing some spicy goodies for us to enjoy.

White Wines

NOTE THE DIFFERENT TIME AND LOCATION!

For this month we will be assisting two of our great club members: Jen and Kyle with their wine selection for their wedding. Everyone will bring a wine from the possibilities list for service at their wedding. Hope to see you at there place.

There is a list of wines for people to bring. Once you sign up for one, please bring it so we dont have duplicates. If people know of a white wine (other than chardonnay) that might go well with chicken kiev, is a common brand, and $8-10 / bottle........that's fine too. (As long as we would be able to order it through the distributor or find it on our own.) That would be great if people brought Rosemount Estate whites as well.

Menu at the reception:
Chicken kiev, Brocolli salad, Baked potato
Marble cake w/ rasberry filling and buttercream frosting

Back to basics, and I do mean Basics. For the September wine party we will go back to the beginning with everyone's starter wine. Call it Blush, Rose, or just Pink, These are some of the most fun and most varied wines. Please try to stay away from the traditional White Zin. Try a Spanish Rosado or a French grenache or even a rose sparling wine. There are tons out there. Meka and I will be providing food.
